#MWE 2017 (Music Written Exercise) – Week 2 (2/8/17 – 2/14/17)

On February 1st, 2017 I was introduced to the phenomenon known as #MWE. Unfamiliar with the hashtag well so was I. However, the universe thought it best to introduce me to a world of musical exploration and to test my written skills. The project is the brainchild of @noyokono a music writer who ask individuals to listen to a new album each day in February and to write a few words about it. I, an avid listener and seeker of new music, took up this challenge immediately. Without further ado I give you my #MWE selections

Artist – Trapdoor Social

Album – Trapdoor Social

Trapdoor Social is a lighthearted album that almost seems generic in this day of carbon copy music. However, an album that begins as soft radio copies develops into a cohesive creation of spirit. This album is one you’d expect in a summer movie about teens or young adults discovering their own place in the world. This album has bright dance tracks, moody sweeping ballads, and infectious songs of discovery. Favorite include This Hell, Distance, and Play Song. Most won’t fall in love with this album but it shouldn’t take much for anyone to find something to like. Rating 6.0 out of 10

Artist: The Devil Makes Three

Album: I’m A Stranger Here

An amazing blend of blue grass, folk, and country sounds. This album has something for just about anyone willing to appreciate this folksy sound and a song for every atmosphere.  If you’re kicking back and taking it easy play a track like A Moment’s Rest. Need to get a party jumping try Worse or Better, or if you just need to tap your foot try Spinning Like A Top. The Devil Makes Three can absolutely make a bluegrass fan out anyone and this album speaks to that power. Rating 8.0 out of 10

Artist: Mello Music Company (Various Artist)

Album: Persona

Persona is a collection of tracks by the many great artist who are part of the Mello Music Group. For rap heads this album provides a great deal of diversity to chose from. You have protest rap for the socially inclined,  quirky nerd rap courtesy of Open Mike Eagle for that special crowd, and traditional hip hop tracks mixing soul sounds with lyrical mastery. As an Open Mike Eagle fan I was drawn to his two contributions Dark Comedy Late Night Show & Celebrity Reduction Prayer. Other highlights include Requiem, Word To The Wise, and Circles Around Circles. Rating 7.5 out of 10

Artist: Armor

Album: Collisions

This short EP is a mix of pop dance tracks, fast paced rock anthems, and one poor dud of a song (I’m looking at you track two). Hopefully most people kept listening to the album after the second song Catastrophic. It’s a poor song and truly is the only weakness in this collection of songs. Parasite and Aubrey are good enough songs but the real masterpiece of this work is Old House. It’s a song that keeps your moving and ends leaving you wanting more. Overall it’s a nice piece of work and worth listening. I might suggest maybe skipping the second song on future listens. Rating – 5.0 out of 10.0

Artist: La Roux

Album: Trouble In Paradise

As a fan of La Roux I always meant to listen to this album but it never happened…until today. If you’re a fan of neo funk, powerful female vocals, and dancing then I have a audio Mona Lisa for you. This album will keep your feet moving, your booty shaking, and your heart jumping. Are you a fan of love songs? Then you’ll love the twisting and blossoming ballad Paradise Is You. Enjoy dancing in your underwear at home? Then you’ll want a dose of Kiss & Don’t Tell or the opening track Uptight Downtown. Want something with a heavy bass track? Then you must have a taste of Sexotheque. This album truly has something for just about anyone and is a fun filled musical adventure. Rating 9.4 out of 10.0

Artist: Ray Lamontagne

Album: Gossip In The Grain

I’ve never been a fan of Ray Lamontagne mainly because his voice puts me to sleep most of the times I hear it. Yet, it’s undeniable how amazing his voice is and how well he uses it. This album is a mix of divinely beautiful love ballads, soft folk throwbacks, and delightful melodies. This is the type of album you could put on at a wedding, dinner party, or cross country road trip. Ray’s voice could soothe a crying baby, could pacify a raging dragon, and could make a siren silent. While this coffee house sound is far from my favorite type of music I can certainly appreciate the greatness of his lyrics and vocals. Ratings 8.0 out of 10

Artist: Red Hot Chili Peppers

Album: The Uplift Mofo Party Plan

One of the earliest Red Hot Chili Peppers album The Uplift Mofo Party Plan is a mix of the 80’s Cali-punk scene with funky under beats. Through this album you can see the seeds of greatness that would turn the Red Hot Chili Peppers into a global musical force. You have dirty hits like Special Secret Song Inside, funk tracks Funky Crime, and breakneck ballads like Skinny Sweaty Man. Many will remember the hit Fight Like The Brave but courageous listeners will find hidden gems like Me And My Friends and Walkin Down The Road. Not quite in their prime but this album is still great.
